It’s fair to say that 2020 was a difficult year for most of us, but it was especially difficult for this family, whose devoted husband and loving father passed away last summer. When I first got a phone call from the mom inquiring about a family photo session, I was overcome with emotion. I felt both a deep sadness for the family’s loss and also admiration for their desire to have photos taken despite the circumstances. They wanted to be remembered as they were at that moment. We never know how things will change in our lives, but we know that they will change. I don’t know if this family had to muster up courage to have their photos taken at this session, but I certainly had to muster up courage to show up at their home as the best photographer I could be in order to fairly and accurately tell the family’s story in a way that would also honor Mike.

Mike used to wear a lot of hoodies. So in a touching tribute during the photo session, everyone changed outfits and put on Mike’s hoodies of his favorite teams. We took some photos in the back yard, front yard, and my personal favorite, on the trampoline. The trampoline wasn’t a planned part of the session, but when the son wanted to jump, I strongly supported it and encouraged everyone to jump! You could see so much joy on everyone’s faces. They were laughing so hard and having so much fun together. It was heartwarming to see that despite such a big personal loss, there was no loss of love. Wearing Mike’s hoodies was a perfect tribute to an amazing man. And I hope these photos reflect that his presence is deeply felt by his strong family who is carrying on in the most admirable way.
