“Against All Odds” – June 1, 2019 @ The Miracle Theatre – Washington, DC
When I first learned of DC127, the non-profit organization that helps foster kids, I was impressed by what they do to make sure every child in DC has a stable home. I was also saddened by the statistics. For example, there are 850+ children in DC’s foster care system and 1200+ children at-risk of entering foster care. 95% of children in DC’s foster care system are African American. Nationally, less than 3% of youth who age out of foster care get a college degree. 60% of child sex-trafficking victims have a history in foster care.
So I was excited at the opportunity to photograph one of DC127’s fundraising events. Held at the Miracle Theatre, the “Against All Odds” storytelling event featured eight talented speakers who told true stories of their lives. The stories were funny, sad, heartbreaking, and inspiring. They were raw, powerful, captivating, authentic, and courageous. Most of all, they showed the depth and strength of the human spirit. It was a privilege to witness. Please check out this organization and find out how you can help foster kids and their families and communities.
